Two Monks disappeared after raid in Labrang Monastery

The Chinese security forces arrested two monks from Labrang Monastery on 14 May 2009 during a raid in their residences. The whereabouts of the arrestees remain unknown to their family members till date. This is the fourth time they were arrested by the Chinese authorities since last year’s protests in Labrang which saw one of the biggest and most sustained protests, according to information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) expresses its utter disappointment over the de facto expulsion of TCHRD from the United Nations Review Conference on Racism (DRC) being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 20 -24 April 2009. The Centre is appalled by the decision of its non-accreditation to the DRC by the preparatory committee on procedural ground. TCHRD is one of the several non-governmental organisations whose accreditation was overstepped upon by the preparatory committee due to a procedural matter on 17 April 2009. Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) objected to the Centre's accreditation.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) expresses its deepest concern at the first known cases of death sentences passed by the Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People’s Court for two Tibetans in connection to last year’s 14 March Lhasa unrest. Two other Tibetans were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve and another sentenced to life imprisonment in three separate cases of arson, reportedly involving the deaths of seven people.

Earlier a monk Phuntsok, age 27, was beaten to death by the Chinese security forces on 25 March 2009 by the Chinese security forces for postings calling for a boycott of farming.

The Chinese state mouthpiece "Xinhua News Agency" on 4 February 2009 released a report concerning the stepping up of security restriction in "Tibet Autonomous Region" ("TAR") and non -"TAR" regions of Tibet. According to Xinhua report, the Security Department of the Central Government of China released an official paper titled "The Key Task To Improve The Overall Security Situation in 2009". The paper spelled out 33 Points to combat security threats. Out of the 33 Points, 15 points dealt on security concerns in the "TAR" and "Non-TAR" regions of Tibet.
