The rights and freedoms set forth in the Declaration -- such as nondiscrimination; freedom of movement and association; right to education and asylum; freedom of thought, opinion, and expression; and freedom from torture, arbitrary detention-- are of particular importance to Tibetans who have undergone one of the most difficult periods in her history in recent times with massive human rights violations in every sphere of their lives under the Chinese rule.

In the past few days, five Tibetans were given lengthy prison sentences ranging from 3 -10 years' imprisonment term by the Kardze Intermediate People's Court in Dartsedo (Ch: Kangding), Kardze "Tibet Autonomous Prefecture" ('TAP') Sichuan Province on charges ranging from "endangering state security to disrupting public order and other crimes", according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) from reliable sources.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) received confirmed information that, Geshe Sonam Phuntsok, a former political prisoner who spent five years in prison for his religious activities and for conducting a long life prayer ceremony for the Dalai Lama in October 1999, passed away on 5 April 2008 in Kardze after a prolong battle with multiple illnesses following a lengthy imprisonment and maltreatment in the prison.

Eight dead bodies have been brought into Ngaba Kirti Monastery according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. The bodies were brought in from the protest scene in Ngaba County, Sichuan Province. Sources say at least "30 Tibetans felled" after armed troops shot indiscriminately into the peacefully protesting Tibetans. Out of the eight bodies, one has been identified as Lobsang Tashi, a former monk in his mid 20s. The remaining bodies are unidentified at the moment. The monks in Kirti Monastery are currently offering prayers for the deceased.

Lhasa, the capital city, in particular is still reeling under extremely tense situation at the moment since yesterday demonstration. Information from Tibet indicates Chinese authorities' imposing curfew in the entire Lhasa city with entry into city completely cut-off by posting many new check posts at all the entry points into the City. All the roads and shops remain closed in the city with heavy presence of armored military vehicles and additional contingent of People's Armed Police (PAP)- a paramilitary troops sent into the city to suppress people from demonstrating again. The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) receives the names of four of the protesters who were arrested yesterday from the Barkhor Street in Lhasa. They are identified as 1) Trulku Tenpa Rigsang (a reincarnated lama originally from Golok Lungkar Monastery currently undergoing higher Buddhist studies at the Sera Monastery in Lhasa) 2) Gelek Pel 3) Samten and 4) Thubwang. According to reliable sources there were 16 protesters (14 monks and 2 laypersons) in the group as against earlier media reports of around ten people in the group.

Khenpo Jinpa, a monk from Chogtsang Talung Monastery in Serthar County, Kardze "Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture" ("TAP"), Sichuan, has been sentenced to three years prison term by the Kardze People's Intermediate Court on 16 July 2007, according to confirm information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD). He was charged of endangering the state security by "anti-government propaganda and incitement of masses".
